AMERICANESE
31 March Friday, 8pm
OPENING FEATURE / CHICAGO PREMIERE
Eric Byler | 2006 | 107 min | 35mm | USA
Starring Chris Tashima, Joan Chen, Allison Sie, and Kelly Hu
Breaking up is hard to do, but letting go is even harder in Eric Byler’s long-awaited
of Shawn Wong’s classic novel, American Knees. Raymond Ding, a divorced Chinese
professor is still in love with Aurora Crane, his Amerasian photographer girlfriend, twenty years his junior. Both deny their long relationship is over, clinging on to a platonic friendship that
complicates this postmodern romance about the oftentimes errant decisions couples regret, and
the external forces that come to bear as a result.
Yet, despite the constant interference of unsupportive friends and family and the interal turmoil
of generational, racial, and idealistic difference, loose ends are left untied, allowing these two
inseparable but momentarily estranged souls to reunite.
Byler (Charlotte Sometimes) is keen on the affairs of the heart, his unerring eye capturing
moments of private truths that is the circular nature and stronger force of love.
