KIÊU

2 April Sunday, 5:45pm
CHICAGO PREMIERE
V ˜u T. Thu Hà | 2006 | 75 min | video | USA
Starring Kathy Uyên and Christopher Dinh

A wistful tale of unrequited love between a young and beautiful woman named Kiêu coping with loss, swelled by regret, and an awkwardly shy Vietnamese grocer. Far from her homeland and constantly haunted by the remembrance of things past, of her unselfish older brother who died protecting her at sea in their journey to freedom as youngsters, she succumbs to societal pressure and sells herself as a prostitute to make ends meet and to achieve her American Dream in the land of opportunity. Her alter ego is revealed when the young grocery clerk stops in at
the brothel she works for.
Director V˜u T. Thu Hà retells the famous Vietnamese epic poem of the namesake heroine who sacrifices herself to save her family as a gorgeously composed symphony of brilliant colors that paints each frame lyrically, eluding time, tying together the past with the present, blurring the here and there without any hurry or undue judgment.
