THE CONVENTIONEERS
6 April Thursday, 8:15pm
CHICAGO PREMIERE
Mora Mi-Ok Stephens | 2005 | 95 min | video | USA
Starring Matthew Mabe, Woodwyn Koons, and Alek Friedman
One Republican. One Democrat. A fair and balanced love story. America’s current division into Red and Blue States is given a romantic twist in the ironic Romeo & Juliet-esque Conventioneers. Blending documentary and fiction with real events and real activists from both sides of the aisle, and set against the 2004 Republican National Convention, The Conventioneers explores the complicated,
bitter love affair between a Republican delegate and a Democrat protesting the RNC.
Lea (Woodwyn Koons), a die-hard liberal, has returned to her father’s apartment in New York City to take part in Democratic protests against the GOP. She meets up with fellow Dartmouth Alum, Massey (Matthew Mabe), who is in New York to participate in the GOP as a representative
from Texas. They embark on a passionate relationship that is kindled as much by their intense political differences as their shared past of mutual attraction. During the course of the convention, their fundamental beliefs about politics, fidelity, and relationships are tested.
Directed by Mora Stephens, Conventioneers was named winner of the IFP 2006 Independent Spirit Award’s, John Cassavetes Award for Best Feature. The film premiered at the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival and had its international premiere at the 2005 Pusan International Film Festival.
