RED DOORS
8 April Saturday, 8pm CLOSING FEATURE / CHICAGO PREMIERE
Georgia Lee | 2005 | 90 min | 35mm | USA
Starring Tzi Ma, Jacqueline Kim, Elaine Kao, and Kathy Shao-Lin Lee
At first glance, the Wongs seem like a perfectly normal Chinese American family. But when each family member begins to reevaluate his or her life, things become more than a little troublesome. While Katie (Kathy Shao-Lin Lee), the youngest daughter, has an obsession with twisted and sinister pranks, Julie (Elaine Kao), the quiet middle child, explores her sexuality with the unlikeliest of people. As the oldest of the sisters, Samantha (Jacqueline Kim) has always had the pressure of setting a good example by being successful. With her thirtieth birthday quickly approaching, she begins to reexamine both her career choice and her personal life, finally
tapping into emotions that have been repressed for years. All the while, Ed (Tzi Ma), their newly retired father, finds it difficult to cope with change, wishing his daughters were still just little girls in his arms. Although the Wongs may have trouble expressing their discontent with other, they realize that comfort and security can be found behind Red Doors.
With all the familiar funny and touching, chaotic and neurotic moments you would swear were drawn from your own life, writer and first time feature director Georgia Lee assembles a cast whose performances shine a light on the Asian side of a typical American family.
