GRASSROOTS RISING / ARNOLD MORENO = PI

10 April Monday , 6:15pm

However radical, social change almost always happens slowly but its inspirations can hit us on many levels. These documentaries show how one life can move a community, and how a com-munity can move a society through private and public revolutions.

Grassroots Risings
Robert Winn | 2005 | 56 min | video | USA

The latest production from Visual Communications, Grassroots Rising examines the Asian and Latino labor-workers movements in Los Angeles. Korean restaurant workers, Filipino housekeepers, sweatshop and supermarket workers strive together to bring about better working conditions for their immigrant work forces. Through their activism these often exploited underclass workers struggle to claim their place in America.

Arnold Moreno = PI
Ryan Yokota, Huy Chheng, Anjali Nath, Long Trinh | 2005 | 18 min | video | USA

Arnold Moreno, a Salvadorian youth who grew up in the Filipino community of Echo Park, Los Angeles, was a former gang member turned artist and community activist. His untimely death shattered his close knit community and also brought to light the problems uninsured Americans face with public health care. This film reflects on the legacy of Arnold Moreno, to show that his life and impact truly was and continues to be infinite.
